Driving. A testing time

Mohammed’s ADHD story

It had taken Mohammed four attempts to pass his driving test. He now felt that driving was a constant struggle. He said there were so many things to notice and think about from other drivers, bikes and pedestrians to trying to work out where he was going, what lane he should be in, to watch his speed, as well as taking note of road signs.

It was a confusing blur and he struggled to take it all on board and not be distracted by interesting things that he passed. He felt stressed and scared by it all and tried to avoid driving as much as he could.

I remember the day of my first appointment. I was feeling very nervous. My main concern was that I would not be taken seriously- me, woman in late 30's, in medical profession, with a fantastic family, but still feeling as a complete failure, with a great sense of underachievement. I kept failing exams, and used to take much longer than others to complete projects. The career progression was slower that expected, despite hard work, motivation and ambitions. That visit was a breakthrough moment of my life. Before going in, I was very nervous, but the staff were kind and friendly, which provided me with a very friendly atmosphere. They are very quick at replying with emails, and very supportive, even after you have been diagnosed.
